NGC 457 - Cassiopeia

NGC 457 is a beautiful open cluster located in the constellation Cassiopeia. Here's a summary of its key features:

  • Designation: NGC 457

  • Also known as: Caldwell 13, the Owl Cluster, the ET Cluster, or the Dragonfly Cluster.

  • Constellation: Cassiopeia

  • Type: Open cluster

  • Distance: Approximately 7,900 light-years from Earth

  • Age: Estimated to be around 21 million years old

  • Notable Features:

    • Appearance: The cluster is visually striking, resembling an owl or a dragonfly (hence the nicknames).
    • Bright Stars: It contains two prominent bright stars, Phi-1 Cassiopeiae (φ1 Cas) and HD 7909. These stars often represent the "eyes" of the Owl or Dragonfly. Phi-1 Cassiopeiae is a foreground star and not a member of the cluster.
    • Stellar Population: It consists of a relatively young population of hot, blue stars.
    • Size: The cluster spans approximately 20 light-years in diameter.
  • Observation: NGC 457 is a popular target for amateur astronomers, especially through binoculars or a small telescope. It's best viewed during the autumn and winter months when Cassiopeia is high in the northern sky.
